About this Hemen & Co. Male Tanpura – No. 563 (Miraj Style Tambura)
This Tanpura is crafted by Tapan Hemen Das of Hemen & Co. premier string instrument maker. He has been doing this for generations. This Tanpura comes with a balanced, rounded, exceptionally full and warm sound and with richness in overtones. It's carefully crafted from a thoroghly dired Indian Tun Wood and the toomba is made from a perfectly shaped dried gourd, thus creating a resonance expected from this superior product. The keynote can be tuned from F sharp to G sharp.
The construction of the male Tanpuras is, apart from the size, the same as that of the female ones. With a size of around 57 inches they are a little larger than the female Tanpuras, this is why their tuning is around G, between the instrumental Tanpuris and the male Tanpuras. They are equipped with 4 strings (3 Steel Strings & 1 Bronze) and are traditionally used for accompanying male singers.
The richness in overtones is closely related to the position of the threads which are squeezed in between bridge and strings. If you would like to maintain or change the richness in overtones, you should newly adjust these threads every once in a while in order to keep your favourite sound pattern. This may be necessary with every new tuning of the instrument.
This tanpura has a tasteful inlay work and traditional wooden carving design on the toomba.
This Tanpura comes with an extra set of strings, mizrabs and a tuning string - you can also order more of these optionally. It includes Fiber Trolly worth $300 - this keeps your delicate Tanpura safe during the transport. You can also buy a padded gig bag.

NOTE: It is advised to please open the packing of the instrument so that it gets aired and it stays in tune. Also, it is recommended to keep it away from extreme hot or damp area.
